THE DELPHI FLYFISHING SCHOOL
featuring PETER O’REILLY

World-class instruction at Ireland’s most beautiful fishing lodge

Peter O’Reilly (FFF Master, THCI and APGAI–Ireland Instructor) has been running his very successful fly-fishing school at Delphi for over twenty years. With residential courses designed to suit all requirements, there is no better place to learn this most elegant form of fishing. And the skills acquired can be put into practice on all sorts of waters all over the world.

Peter has written several best-selling books on fly-fishing and fly-tying. He is the ultimate professional and a consummate teacher, with a remarkable and rare ability to identify and to cure any technical casting problems with the minimum of fuss. A gentle man, he is a great communicator and dedicated to ensuring that all his students derive maximum personal benefit from each course.

The 2010 course dates are shown below.

Fly-fishing for Beginners - €695

These popular 3-day residential courses, normally run over weekends, provide an all-round introduction to fly-fishing. They are designed both for absolute beginners and for those wishing to improve their knowledge and eliminate troublesome casting faults.

The programme covers:

  • How to fish safely

  • Casting with single-handed rods

  • Correct rod-arm mechanics

  • Casting accuracy

  • Coping with windy conditions

  • Spey-casting and roll-casting

  • Leader making and fishing knots

  • Equipment appraisal; choosing tackle to suit your needs

  • Watercraft and how to read a river

  • Demonstrations of wet-fly, dry-fly and upstream nymph fishing

  • Fly-tying demonstration

  • An opportunity to river fish for trout each day

  • Guided boat fishing on one of Connemara’s premier fisheries

Students are given a complimentary set of Peter’s laminated ‘prompt cards’ as an aide memoir for the future. The courses are limited to eight participants.

Spey Casting - €695

Spey casting and other techniques of fly-fishing with two-handed rods are increasingly popular on salmon rivers all over the world. Being able to lift a long line and cast it effortlessly and gracefully is every salmon angler’s dream. Peter makes it all look easy and will teach you to master the techniques in a very short time. 3-day residential courses. Maximum six participants.

Advanced Salmon and Trout Fishing - €895

These sought-after courses assume basic casting competence and represent a natural progression for those who have already done the beginners course. They involve full-time river and lake fishing for salmon and trout, both at Delphi and on other waters, with Peter and a team of expert guides all helping to raise your game. Up for a challenge? The record catch on one of these courses stands at 5 salmon for one novice angler. 3-day residential courses. Maximum six participants.

Personal Tuition - €395 per day

By arrangement, Peter O’Reilly is sometimes available for personal one-on-one tuition at Delphi. This is probably one of the best investments an aspiring fly-fisher could ever make. Advance reservation essential. Accommodation charges are additional.

All Courses

All the Delphi courses involve maximum individual care and attention from Peter himself. After a course at Delphi, participants are equipped with all the knowledge and skills required for a long and successful fly-fishing life.

All courses are residential and include accommodation and all meals. The prices are based on shared rooms – for single rooms a supplement applies (see below).

Course participants should bring warm and proper waterproof clothing, including waterproof over-trousers and wellington boots, a hat and sunglasses or other eye protection. All fishing tackle is provided. But, if you have your own tackle, by all means bring it along for assessment by Peter as to its suitability.
